The following are resources and programs developed by the SWUTC to introduce transportation concepts to pre-college individuals to attract future transportation professionals.

Program: Go Girl! Exploring Transportation Career Horizons
Designed as a one-day workshop for girls in grade levels K-9 that offers an opportunity to gain hands on experience and insight into what transportation, engineering, and technology careers have to offer. And encourage interests in science and math and offer exposure and mentoring from female role models currently working in the field of transportation. Program: Houston National Summer Transportation Institute
This well-established four week program held annually at Texas Southern University in Houston is designed to attract secondary students to and enhance their interest in careers in transportation and improve mathematics, science, communication and technology skills. Through the course of the program, all modes of transportation are addressed and augmented with hands-on technical activities, lectures by transportation professionals and field trips to such places as TxDOT District Offices, TranStar, Houston METRO, Port of Houston, airport operation and maintenance facilities, and the Texas Transportation Institute research facilities. Program: Texas Summer Transportation Institute
Held annually at Paul Quinn College in Dallas, Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, and at the University of Texas at El Paso campus in El Paso, this 1-2 week program is designed to attract secondary students to and enhance their interest in careers in transportation and improve mathematics, science, communication and technology skills. Through the course of the program, all modes of transportation are addressed and augmented with hands-on technical activities, lectures by transportation professionals and field trips to such places as TxDOT District Offices, TransGuide, DART, VIA, Port of Corpus Christi, airport operation and maintenance facilities, and the Texas Transportation Institute research facilities. Program: Rural Texas Summer Transportation Institute
Held annually at Texas A&M University Kingsville and Weslaco, Texas, this two-week program is designed to attract secondary students to and enhance their interest in careers in transportation and improve mathematics, science, communication and technology skills. Through the course of the program, all modes of transportation are addressed and augmented with hands-on technical activities, lectures by transportation professionals and field trips to such places as TxDOT District Offices, Port of Corpus Christi, and Port Isabel. Program: Texas Summer Aviation Institute
Designed as a two-week program for 10th and 11th grade students to introduce them to aviation careers opportunities. The core curriculum includes speakers, field trips, videos, and hands on activities highlighting the importance of aviation. The students experience the effects of science, math, and engineering as they participate in aviation-related activities. Students also participate in hands-on activities and problem solving initiatives that incorporate team building and cooperative learning to teach principles of flight, aerodynamics, aerial navigation, Newton's Laws, aircraft instrumentation, Bernoulli's Principle, materials science, general math, an the history of flight. Program: Post-Houston National Summer Transportation Institute
Designed as a follow-on internship program to the Houston National Summer Transportation Institute (HNSTI), this program places previous HNSTI students in internship positions in the transportation industry. During the three month long summer program, students are provided the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, tackle an important issue, make valuable connections within the industry, and contribute to a project or program that can make a difference.
