Initiative Summary

Abstract:
Many transportation professionals know that increased understanding of design of experiments, field studies, micro-simulation, and data analysis will help advance their careers.  They do not, however, have time to take a college course.  This effort developed a one-day short course that covered the highlights of a one-semester course based upon the SWUTC developed textbook Transportation Statistics and Microsimulation.  The course materials included the textbook, and PowerPoint slides.

Implementation of Initiative Outcomes:
This short course was offered January 22, 2012 during the 91st Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board in Washington, D.C.

Impacts/Benefits of Implementation:
By discussing statistical concepts in the context of transportation planning and operations, this workshop provided the necessary background for transportation and pavement professionals to make informed transportation-related decisions.  It explained the why behind standard methods and used real-world transportation examples and problems to illustrate key concepts.

Feedback from the workshop participants, which numbered around 20, was very positive.
